THE Guangzhou-Zhuhai (freight) Railway is expected to come into operation by 2011, and meanwhile, planning of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is progressing smoothly, it was announced at a press conference on January 18. Research of the environment issues regarding bridge and the sea is to be completed in June.

The Zhuhai Jiuzhou Cargo Terminal relocation project, the railway, Pearl River Delta railroad network Guangzhou-Zhuhai section, Zhuhai Shell lubricating oil project, Beijing-Hong-Kong-Macao Expressway Shaxi in Zhongshan to Hengqin in Zhuhai, Zhuhai Power Plant V and VI units and HK-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge have been listed as 2008 Guangdong Key Projects.

THE city GDP achieved a growth rate of 16.5 per cent, topping 88.68 billion yuan ($12.23 billion) in 2006, a 0.1 percentage point rise from the previous year and the highest growth since 2004.

The GDP maintained a steady increase with growth rate reaching 13.1, 13.8, 16.2 and 16.5 per cent in the four quarters respectively.
